Are you in a triangulated relationship?
Oct 03, 2023No, not that kind of threesome! 🫣
I’m talking about alcohol being the third “person” in your relationship.
When was the last time you went on a date with your significant other and did not order a drink at dinner? Is drinking together just what you do? Do you need alcohol to feel connected?
If you have to drink to enjoy someone or some “thing,” maybe you don’t really enjoy them!
Needing a drink to tolerate a situation or person is a lie. There is never a circumstance that requires a drink. No argument with your boss. No stressful period of parenting. Not even a divorce from a friend or significant other.
Don’t believe the lie that alcohol makes you feel more comfortable. Buffering with alcohol is a temporary solution and often leaves you feeling worse.
By allowing alcohol to be the third person in the relationship, you are missing out on an authentic connection.
Take a minute to think about the people or events that you think require a drink. Is it true that you need alcohol in these circumstances, or have you just believed the lie?
Instead of using alcohol to buffer your emotions in uncomfortable relationships or situations, consider these options instead.
1. Separate yourself from anyone you don’t enjoy being around without drinking. Instead of depending on alcohol as a buffer in the relationship, set firm boundaries for yourself.
2. Politely decline an invitation that you think “requires” a drink to get through. Why suffer twice? Trying to get through the event is miserable, and the resulting hangover from trying to get through the event is miserable too!
3. Shift your mindset and intentionally get together without alcohol. Plan sober hangouts or dates. You’ll be amazed by the depth of conversation and feel great in the morning!
Kick alcohol out of your relationships and watch your connections grow!
